Don’t Stop Here
Genesis 11:31
Terah took Abram his son and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife, and they went forth together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go into the land of Canaan, but when they came to Haran, they settled there.
There is nothing more exhilarating than being called by God. The God of the universe, our heavenly Father, calls us, and suddenly it feels like our life has begun. He calls us out of our familiarity, out of our comfort zone, and beyond our known skill set. We embark on a journey that He is charting for us.
We don’t know the way. Often, we don’t know the why. Nevertheless, we set out—exhilarated, fully dependent, and scared. Just like that, we set out.
Like those who came before us, we too have been called to a land unknown, sent to a people we have never met. We trust God to guide every step, relying on Him for our daily provision as we strive to follow Him.
But the journey is arduous. It is taking longer than expected, and it feels lonely. Being surrounded by the unfamiliar is exhausting. Our hearts start to yearn for the familiar. Even our former bondage appeals to us, tempting us to turn back and return to what we have always known. Yes, it may be slavery, but at least we know what to expect from our former taskmasters.
We know better than to turn back. But do we possess the strength to persevere in the call?
The greatest temptation for those who have set out with God is not to turn back but to settle in the “not quite.” We are not where we used to be, but we are also not where we are meant to go. Doubt creeps in, and we settle. We settle down in the in-between.
We will never find satisfaction in God while living in the in-between. Let us not settle down in the halfway point. Instead, let us keep pressing on with God. Let us continue listening to His voice and keep our hearts receptive to the leading of the Spirit. Remember, He guides us into the unknown so that we may find Him. Keep trusting. Keep going.
