Before diving into our reading, let’s reflect on the book of Hebrews. Its authorship remains anonymous, diving straight into the supremacy of Jesus without distraction. My hunch? It could have been penned by a woman, perhaps Priscilla. This thought isn’t rooted in solid evidence, merely personal speculation, but it intrigues me. The idea of a nameless, faceless writer, fully known by God and utterly devoted to spotlighting the magnificence of Jesus, resonates deeply.
Now, let’s delve into Hebrews 6 without further ado.
Hebrews 6 reads:
13 “Now when God made a promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater than himself, he swore an oath on his own integrity to keep the promise as sure as God exists! 14 So he said,
‘Have no doubt, I promise to bless you over and over, and give you a son and multiply you without measure!'”
This passage highlights God’s promise to Abraham, a promise so significant it’s worth revisiting to fully grasp its magnitude, for it extends beyond Abraham to us as inheritors.
15 “So Abraham waited patiently in faith and succeeded in seeing the promise fulfilled. 16 It is very common for people to swear an oath by something greater than themselves, for the oath will confirm their statements and end all dispute. 17 So in the same way, God wanted to end all doubt and confirm it even more forcefully to those who would inherit his promises. His purpose was unchangeable, so God added his vow to the promise. 18 So it is impossible for God to lie for we know that his promise and his vow will never change!”
The emphasis here is on the unchangeable nature of God’s promise, not just to Abraham but also to all who inherit his promises, including us. This promise isn’t only about Isaac’s conception but points to The Son, Jesus, given to us.
“And now we have run into his heart to hide ourselves in his faithfulness. This is where we find his strength and comfort, for he empowers us to seize what has already been established ahead of time—an unshakable hope! 19 We have this certain hope like a strong, unbreakable anchor holding our souls to God himself. Our anchor of hope is fastened to the mercy seat in the heavenly realm beyond the sacred threshold, 20 and where Jesus, our forerunner, has gone in before us. He is now and forever our royal Priest like Melchizedek.”
Jesus, our High Priest, symbolizes our hope, securely anchored in the mercy seat. Just as Melchizedek offered Abraham bread and wine, Jesus offers us His body and blood. We, too, are invited to the Lord’s table, inheriting the promises bestowed upon Abraham, now realized through Christ.
Genesis 14:
18 “And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) 19 And he blessed him and said, ‘Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; 20 and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!'”
As inheritors of this promise, we should anticipate the fulfillment of being blessed “over and over” and multiplied “without measure.” With our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, we stay watchful, confident in His promise to complete the work He has begun in us. Keep watch!
