Discovering Our Role in God’s Story: Engaging with Scripture Beyond History
Day 4 – January 4

Often, we approach the scriptures as if they were merely a historical account. This perspective, though common, overlooks the dynamic and living nature of God’s Word. The Bible, vibrant and active, is not just a record of the past but a guide for the present and a promise for the future.
Many promises within these sacred pages have been fulfilled, yet the unfolding of God’s narrative continues. It’s essential to see ourselves within this living text. A dear friend and mentor often emphasizes this through Hebrews 10:7, “Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’” (ESV) He passionately urges our generation to find our reflection in the scriptures, to recognize ourselves as part of this divine story.
Consider John the Baptist, who identified himself with Isaiah’s prophecy (Isaiah 40:3), “A voice cries: ‘In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God…'” (ESV). John didn’t just read about a prophet; he became the prophecy, living out God’s word with his very being.
Prophecy, often perceived as a script that merely unfolds, also invites our active participation. It’s not just about events that miraculously transpire but about engaging with the divine narrative. Jesus, our perfect example, strategically positioned Himself in Capernaum, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy (Matthew 4:13-16 TPT). He intentionally stepped into the Word, relocating to fulfill what had been written concerning Himself.
This brings us to a compelling thought: perhaps the scriptures are an open invitation for us to engage actively. Rather than passively reading the Bible as a history book, let’s approach it with the intent to discover our role in God’s ongoing story. We are not mere spectators; the Bible assures us that we are intricately woven into the fabric of His plan.
As this year unfolds, my prayer for you mirrors my own desire: to hear God’s voice clearer than ever, to find ourselves actively participating in His work, and to align our steps with His. Let’s aspire to be not just observers but living embodiments of His word, witnessing firsthand His work in this hour.
Together, let’s embrace the journey of finding ourselves in the scroll of God’s living Word. Let’s find ourselves in the scroll!
