Ask for the Nations

Day 2 – January 2
Genesis 3-25, Matthew 2, Psalm 98
Have you ever fervently prayed for something, only to find that God’s answer plunges you into greater turmoil than you anticipated? I’ve experienced times when receiving exactly what I prayed for left me more baffled than ever before.
God’s answers sometimes prompt more questions than they resolve.
Ever felt this way?
Or perhaps you’ve taken a leap of faith, but instead of miraculously walking on water, you’ve found yourself floundering, far from the powerful image you expected to portray.
I’ve been there too. We often hold a specific vision of what a successful relationship with God should resemble, believing that unwavering trust in Him equals a life filled with wealth, fame, and more – fill in the blank here: ______________.
Yet, while it’s true that all of God’s promises are ‘yes’ and ‘amen,’ His responses aren’t confined to our interpretations. The fulfillment of God’s Word will indeed occur, but the ways and means remain a beautiful mystery.
The verse comes to mind, “And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.” (Matthew 11:6)
God’s timing and methods are His own. Over the years, I’ve witnessed strong believers lose their way because God’s responses didn’t align with their expectations. I’ve seen others grow bitter because God’s timing exceeded their patience. And some have been overwhelmed by the unexpected cost of their answered prayers.
For we know in part and we prophesy in part (1 Corinthians 13:9)
In today’s reading, a verse stood out to me:
Genesis 25
21 Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, who was childless. The Lord granted his prayer, and Rebekah, his wife, conceived. 22 As the babies struggled together within her, she questioned, “Why is this happening to me?”…
Rebekah’s dilemma feels familiar. She’s in the midst of God’s answer – her long-awaited pregnancy – yet it’s not as she envisioned. Faced with unexpected challenges, she voices a question we’ve likely all asked: “Why is this happening to me?”
We often expect that being in God’s will means a path free of hardship. Rebekah’s struggles challenge this notion.
But her response to this upheaval is enlightening.
Rather than succumbing to despair or offense, Rebekah seeks understanding from the Lord. Verse 22 concludes with: “So she went to inquire of the Lord.”
She sought God’s perspective. And in response, God revealed a greater narrative – one involving nations and destinies, far beyond her initial understanding.
Are you grappling with God’s dealings in your life? You’re not alone. Let’s resolve in 2024 to not dwell in confusion. Like Rebekah, let us seek God’s wisdom. Surely, as He answered her, He will respond to us with clarity and purpose.
