(Numbers 21-22, Mark 7:14-37)
And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why
have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.” (Numbers 21:5 ESV)
The Israelites had walked through the Red Sea, were being led by a fire by night and cloud by day, they were being fed manna in the wilderness, water issued from a rock… and yet, they had not yet learned to trust the Lord. Miraculous sign followed after sign, and yet their hearts remained in disbelief.
Every time they came to an obstacle, they became enraged. They were angry with the One who loved them and carried them out of bondage. They were still not free in their hearts. They were still captive and bound. They were still enslaved to fear.
We will face many hardships along the way. Jesus told us this plainly. When we come to the impossible, may we find that our hearts release a prayer and not a complaint! When we come up against a foe that looms over us, may we recount the promises of God! He will deliver us.
It is for freedom that we have been set free! The next time you face the impossible, lift up your cry to the Lord and watch Him come to your rescue. Watch Him do what only He can do. Every obstacle is an opportunity to be awestruck again by our God.
