(Genesis 38-40, Matthew 12:22-50)
I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned. (Matthew 12:26-37 ESV)
Jesus is the Truth, the Life and the Way… He preached another reality, the Kingdom of Heaven, the kingdom at hand. Somehow, over the years, He is depicted as a caricature of Himself. He’s portrayed as a mild mannered, soft-spoken, effeminate man, whose greatest desire is not to offend his creation.
All it takes is a reading of the scriptures, a reading of His own words, to shatter these misconceptions. Jesus is not afraid of offending us. In fact, he doesn’t mind provoking us! He has a day in mind that many of us do not see. It is the day of the Lord; The day of judgment. He has come to make us ready for this day.
It’s not popular today to preach about judgment. It’s much more popular to talk about your best life now. But Jesus directs us to something future, and altogether more real, more final. He cautions us to live in light of this reality.
We will give an “account for every careless word.” If we can trust Jesus for salvation, then we can most certainly trust Him to prepare us for everything that lies ahead. Ask the Lord to renew your fear of Him. This is wisdom.
