(Exodus 13-15, Matthew 19:1-15
And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” And he cried to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a log, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. (Exodus 15:24, 25 ESV)
It’s possible to be exactly in the plan of God, completely in the midst of God’s plan for our lives, and still up against impossible circumstances. The people of Israel had just been liberated from Egypt! God had just parted the Red Sea and the Israelites had walked through on dry ground… walls of water towering on the right and left. There was finally victory! Finally breakthrough!!
And then… three days later, they find themselves wandering in the wilderness with no water. They began to grumble and complain. Fear set in and bitterness began to take root. There was an offense that rose up on the inside, an offense that the Israelites found themselves in need of God yet again.
There is a misconception that we struggle against today. We want to be free… but we don’t want to be dependent. We want to have liberty, but we don’t want to have need. God is leading us back into leaning, a posture that we lost way back in the Garden of Eden. We have grown old… we have forgotten how to lean. It seems unnatural, even though it was our original disposition. We are all learning how to seek the Lord. Don’t fret when you come up to what looks impossible. Cry out to the Lord. That’s not too hard!
