(2 Samuel 23-24, Luke 22:31-53)
…The Philistines gathered together at Lehi, where there was a plot of ground full of lentils, and the men fled from the Philistines. But he took his stand in the midst of the plot and defended it and struck down the Philistines, and the Lord worked a great victory. 2 Samuel 23:11-12 ESV
There are some assignments that are worth fighting for, even if that means we are fighting alone. Others will say as they flee, “But it’s only a bean field! It’s not worth dying for. It’s not worth fighting for.” You may find yourself standing alone in your field… Fighting for lentils.
The devil would tempt us to devalue the assignment of the Lord. Self-doubt and fear begin to creep in. The thing that seemed so important when we are fighting together suddenly pales when we find ourselves alone. Don’t shrink back. Set you face like flint and press in.
Which of us was noble or important when Christ redeemed us? And yet! And yet, the Lord Jesus staked His claim in us. Though He stood alone, he would not forsake us. Don’t you see? We are His field of lentils. Don’t let the devil, or your own doubts, pull you out of your bean field. Stake your claim. Don’t give up.
