(1 Chronicles 26-27, John 11:18-46)
Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him, but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. (John 11:45-46)
We all see things differently. We can listen to the same message on the same day through the same person, and come away with completely different interpretations of what was spoken. It’s astounding really!
Some hear a message of life, and some hear words that lead to death. The interpretation speaks more about the heart of the hearer than the heart of the speaker.
There was a day that Jesus called a dead man out of his grave. Death couldn’t deafen Lazarus to the command of Jesus. He rose up, leaving death in the dust. He obeyed. Still bound with grave clothes, Lazarus left his putrid tomb, fully responsive to the voice of Jesus. Amazing! Death cannot separate us.
“…and all who watched were amazed and believed in Jesus.” That’s what we imagine the scripture text will say. But in fact, that’s not what it says at all. Some believed! Hallelujah!! But some did not. Some went with accusation in their hearts to inform the Pharisees. Scary! May we be those who see and hear and believe. Let’s put down all accusation and believe.
