(Exodus 31-33, Matthew 22:23-51)

But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.” (Matthew 22:29 ESV)

We need to give ourselves to studying the scriptures. We need to know what the Lord has spoken, but knowing the scriptures alone will not keep us from error. We also need to know the power of God! We need to know the God of power, the God who fulfills His Word.

The kingdom of heaven is more than words, however persuasive they may be. The kingdom of heaven is power. The scriptures need to lead us into divine encounter. They are meant to lead us into relationship with the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The scriptures are to lead us into communion.

By the same token, we cannot pursue relationship or power while disregarding the Word. This is equally dangerous and will lead us into grave error. There was a saying years ago, that a man was as good as his word. (For many, this saying is no longer true.) To know the word, was to know the man. In the same way, to know the Word of God, will lead us into knowing God.

Don’t veer off to the right or the left… live in the tension. Give yourself to the scriptures, and live into the presence of God. You don’t need to choose. It’s both and, not either or.
