(Genesis 6-8, Matthew 3)
“I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” (Matthew 3:11-12 ESV)
I’m so grateful for the baptism of John, the baptism of repentance. John’s message prepared the way for us to see our Savior in Jesus. We were turned in the wrong direction. Pursuing our sin. Lost. John’s message was clear, “Turn around!” That clear clarion call was the beginning, but there is more.
Repentance and forgiveness are glorious, but there is more! We have been invited into a real life with God. Our God is an all-consuming fire. And through Jesus, we are brought close into communion.
Jesus is the baptizer! John came with water to cleanse, but Jesus has come with fire to altar. There is more than forgiveness, there is fire and power!
Jesus comes to baptize with fire. He will be thorough in His assignment. Let’s allow Him to complete His work in us, that there will be no chaff in us remaining. Finish the work you began Jesus!
