(Genesis 29-30, Matthew 10:1-23)
Then Jacob took fresh sticks of poplar and almond and plane trees, and peeled white streaks in them, exposing the white of the sticks. the flocks bred in front of the sticks and so the flocks brought forth striped, speckled, and spotted. (Genesis 30: 37, 39 ESV)
What we give our attention to matters. It will produce something within us and through us. How we conceive is connected to what we conceive.
In Genesis 29, Leah, Jacob’s wife has several sons. Each conception is her attempt to win her husband’s favor and attention. By the time she conceives Judah, her forth child, she has decided to stop fixing her eyes on Jacob, and she sets her attention on the Lord. She conceives Judah from the place of praising God.
It’s not coincidence, that Judah is the son who produces the lineage of Christ. Leah conceived Judah with eyes fixed on the Lord. Judah becomes the root of David, the ancestor of Jesus.
How you conceive, what you focus on, matters! Fix your eyes upon Jesus. My prayer is for your spirit to conceive the plans of God. Take your eyes off of man. Look to Jesus. His Word is good seed. It will grow and develop within you. May our hearts prove to be good soil!
