(1 Samuel 22-24, Luke 16:1-18)
And afterward David’s heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. (1 Samuel 24:5)
Have you ever been wrongfully accused? Have you been driven into the wilderness for what seems like forever? Good! You’re in good company. This is the way of God for those He loves: Intense formings, long delays and wilderness isolation. You, beloved, are in the faith.
But why? Why must the dealings of God be so severe? Why must the anointing bring reproach? Untempered, anointed men (and women) are dangerous. They are dangerous to themselves and dangerous to those they lead. They move in presumption. And the root of presumption is pride.
The express goal of God the Father is to form Christ in us. Jesus did nothing without consulting the Father. No hint of presumption. No pride. Jesus was a man living in complete surrender. This is The Way. It is the way of discipleship, and the way of the cross. It begins with the denying of self, and ends with the manifestation of the glory of God.
David spent over a decade in the wilderness. God had anointed him king of Israel, and yet, he was being hunted from region to region. Had the prophetic word failed? By no means!! It was being worked out in David’s heart. Find God in the process. He’s the destination. He’s our fulfillment, not the assignment.
